چکیده

Systematic differences in photometric stellar surface gravity determination are studied by means of the comparison with empirical values derived from detached double-lined eclipsing binaries. Photometric gravities were computed using Moon&Dworetsky (1985) grids based onKurucz (1979) atmosphere models, and empirical gravities were taken from Andersen (1991). Individual Strömgren colours and β indices of each component of the binary system have to be taken into account to correctly analyze the observed differences. A compilation of data on a sample containing 30 detached double-lined eclipsing binaries with accurate (≈ 1-2%) determination of mass and radius and availableuvbyHβ photometric data is also presented. Correction of the differences in terms ofTeff and log g for the range 11000 K < Teff < 20000 K reduces the mean residuals from 0.13 dex to 0.07 dex. For the range 7000 K < Teff < 8500 K, the consideration of metallicity effects by means of δm◦ index improves the accuracy from 0.20 dex to 0.09 dex.

Eclipsing binaries as standard candles : HD 23642 and the distance to the Pleiades

We present a reanalysis of the light curves of HD 23642, a detached eclipsing binary star in the Pleiades open cluster, with emphasis on a detailed error analysis. We compare the masses and radii of the two stars to predictions of stellar evolutionary models and find that the metal and helium abundances of the Pleiades are approximately solar. We present a new method for finding distances to ec...

Photometric Solutions for Detached Eclipsing Binaries: selection of ideal distance indicators in the SMC

Detached eclipsing binary stars provide a robust one-step distance determination to nearby galaxies. As a by-product of Galactic microlensing searches, catalogs of thousands of variable stars including eclipsing binaries have been produced by the OGLE, MACHO and EROS collaborations. We present photometric solutions for detached eclipsing binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) discovered b...

Photometric Solutions for Semi-Detached Eclipsing Binaries: Selection of Distance Indicators in the Small Magellanic Cloud

Estimation of distances to nearby galaxies by the use of eclipsing binaries as standard candles has recently become feasible because of new large scale instruments and the discovery of thousands of eclipsing binaries as spinoff from Galactic microlensing surveys. Published measurements of distances to detached eclipsing binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud combine stellar surface areas (in ab...

Automated analysis of eclipsing binary lightcurves with EBAS. II. Statistical analysis of OGLE LMC eclipsing binaries

In the first paper of this series we presented EBAS, a new fully automated algorithm to analyse the lightcurves of eclipsing binaries, based on the EBOP code. Here we apply the new algorithm to the whole sample of 2580 binaries found in the OGLE LMC photometric survey and derive the orbital elements for 1931 systems. To obtain the statistical properties of the short-period binaries of the LMC w...

Biparametric calibrations of stellar mass, radius and surface gravity using uvby-Hβ photometry

The aim of this study is to construct biparametric calibrations to estimate masses, radii and surface gravities for main-sequence stars using a photometric index related to effective temperature and another related to evolution. For this purpose, we used a sample of detached doublelined eclipsing binaries with accurate (≈ 1-2%) determinations ofmass and radius andwith available Strömgren-Crawfo...
